Building Leadership and Advocacy Skills in Girls to End School Related Gender-based Violence

School Related Gender Based Violence (SRGBV) continues to place young girls in harm’s way in their learning environments and ultimately deprives them from accessing educational services. Our Brave Girls Initiative supported by A Seed of Change addresses SRGBV, making learning environments free of all forms of abuse and violence, and access to a strong GBV response system in schools.

School girls with and without disabilities were trained to become champions and leaders of peer clubs where they can raise their voices in support of other girls and also ensure they gain knowledge about their rights and freedom from all forms of violence. We developed and disseminated a simplified student version of the Violence against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act as a knowledge and empowerment tool to the girls; The VAPP Act is an act to eliminate violence in private and public life, and provide maximum protection and effective remedies for victims and punishments for offenders.

Girls who are aware of their rights, access to justice, support from their peers and school authorities will play a huge role in ending school related gender-based violence and build early leadership and advocacy skills in girls.
